I am passionate about finding resources for parents! General parenting resources as well as resources to help
parents raise bilingual, multilingual, and multicultural children.
Lulu Nanez is one of those finds that I relish! She is an expert in communicative disorders and in special education with an emphasis in the Education of the deaf and a certified auditory-verbal therapist. The founder of My Parent Academy, the online platform serves as a resource on topics related to parenting, language development, education, and hearing loss. An immigrant Latina mom from Zacatecas, Mexico, Lulu did not speak English when she came to the US with her parents at age 10. Determined to learn the new language, Lulu never allowed her Spanish accent other more fluent students stopped her from pursuing higher education.
Her work experience with children with autism, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, and speech and language delays
defined the career she has today. “I have focused on my specialty of guiding and coaching parents to develop their child’s spoken language through listening, as well as provide support for students and teachers in the mainstream environment.”
I invite you to watch our IGTV!
An advocate of raising bilingual children, regardless of any delays or disabilities, Lulu offers the following tips
for parents:
1. Make a family plan
2. Monitor the child and make necessary changes along the way
3. Ask for help – experts in speech delays, other developmental disabilities.
4. Emphasis in functional language – for example, instead of grammar, try conversational language first.
5. Emphasis on Speaking – talking
6. Find strategies that you can use at home: activities, experiences, books.
7. If hearing impaired- use of earphones
8. Create experience books –for example, a visual story about his first day in school, the sequence of the day up until when mommy picks him up from school.
9. Reward the direction, not perfection!
10. It is a process, no need to rush it!
Gracias, Lulu!!
