Speaking with Davina Ferreira is always a treat. Davi is the founder of a publishing empire that honors women, Alegria Bilingual Media, and Alegria Publishing. In addition to a beautiful bilingual magazine that is released three times a year, Alegria is now publishing the work of Latinx women!
Last week I talked to Davi about the benefits of writing and journaling. “Journaling is an unfiltered way to check-in with yourself. A way to be truthful and to monitor our emotions,” she said. In her quest to promote literature and culture Alegria had released its first book, The Latinx Poetry Project. It is a poetic anthology with over 45 new Latinx poets from diverse backgrounds sharing their poetry on themes from immigration to social justice and feminism. It is available for pre-sale here.
Davi also left us with a few tips for aspiring authors which you can check out below.
Tips for aspiring authors
- Find resources to guide you – books like “Poets and Writers Complete Guide to Being a Writer” by Kevin Larimer and Mary Gannon.
- Take it seriously – commitment and discipline are key.
- Create an ambiance – an area of your house where you can find inspiration to write.
- Find a good team – editors, proofreaders, illustrators, cheerleaders.
- Research traditional publishing and self- publishing options.
- Go for it!
Let’s support Alegria Media and Publishing as they continue to elevate the voices of Latinas and Latinx authors! Thank you, Davina!
