Last Saturday, I spoke with Leslie Arreola-Hillebrand, co-founder of the space Latinx Parenting, a bilingual organization offering family education and support rooted in social justice and children’s rights. She’s also a former early childhood teacher and certified trauma-informed nonviolent parenting facilitator, and the mom of 3 children.
Leslie and I chatted about the state of motherhood during Covid19, re-mothering practices, and her upcoming parenting series workshops.
On May 24, Latinxparenting is offering a course for Chicana/Latina moms entitled Healing the Madre Wound: Remothering the Latina/Chicana Mother. In June, there will be an 8-week series for parents called Criandome, Cuidandome: Reparenting Ourselves While Raising Our Children. Make sure to visit Latinx.org for information and to sign up for the classes.
Here are some great tips for moms about re-mothering ourselves and the process of daily reflection about our own mothering:
- Reflect on our behaviors to understand actions and responses
- Establish boundaries – Protect well-being and self-compassion
Tips for parents for the next few weeks:
- Continue with a daily routine for children
- Release expectations
- For toddlers – Schedule virtual playdates
- Allow for imaginative/creative play – supervise play in an empty bathtub with toys, kitchen pots and pans fun.
- Practice gratitude – model behavior
Thank you, Leslie!
