For our last July IG Live, I had the pleasure of speaking with two Latina authors that have joined the quest for more diverse books in the home libraries of our children.
Delia Ruiz is a young educator and author of the International Award-Winning book, Roquí’s Pandero Beat, a book about the Puerto Rican coquí and his dreams about becoming a musician, and the founder of Aventuras en ESL, a space where she shares her author life and book recommendations.
Marcela Klinsrisuk is the author of two children’s books, My friends from A to Z: A fun way to learn the alphabet, and the bilingual children’s book, ‘What is your favorite color?/¿Cúal es tu color favorito?. She is also the founder of Lion and Archer Books, a place that curates bilingual, educational, and diverse books for children.
I invite you to watch our IGTV!
Marcela believes that children should be exposed to books that celebrate the culture, religions, holidays, and foods of the world. Delia believes that books should validate culture and offer different points of view about the world and that those titles belong in home libraries.
Tips from authors on raising children to love diverse books:
- Read in both English and Spanish
- Lead by example- children should see parents reading.
- Let children choose the reading material.
- Use the local library as a resource – if they don’t have a title you want, ask for it. If they don’t have story time you want, ask to lead it!

Thank you, Delia and Marcela!
