Having conversations with Latina moms, who are making a difference in our communities and in their chosen professional field has been the highlight of my week during this difficult time for all. It has also allowed me the opportunity to reconnect and catch up with amigas like Grace Bastidas, founding editor in chief of Parents Latina, a magazine that offers culturally relevant content for today’s modern Latina mom.
Grace also oversees Ser Padres, the Spanish language brand that has empowered, inspired, and motivated parents for over 30 years! Full disclosure, Ser Padres is one of my absolute favorite parenting magazines of all times. It was the only parenting publication catering to Latino parents when I was raising my children, and it was also one of the publications responsible for my writing career, as I became one of their features-writers for several years. Beautiful memories of my experience and so happy that they are still around for parents today!
Grace is a mom of two daughters. who she is raising bilingual. We chatted about running a magazine while parenting her daughters and life with Covid19. Like most parents with young children, in her case a 5 and 7-year-old.
Grace has been busy parenting, being a teacher and playmate, and still finding the time to hold virtual meetings with her staff and overseeing the productions of her magazine. She is grateful to work with a group of parents that can support each other and be understanding, especially during the quarantine. Parents Latina April/May issue honored the earth, and it included a guide and resources to living an eco-friendly life. Grace encouraged parents to reach out to her editorial staff at Parents Latina with story ideas and suggestions. “We want to celebrate our community. Story ideas are always welcome!” Make sure to follow Parents Latina and Ser Padres!
