I met Laurita Tellado in person at a conference in Miami in 2016. That Puerto Rican thing kicked off in high gear and we became fast friends! Her Mami and Papi were with her and the three of us spent some time talking about our beloved island. Always smiling, Laurita’s non-stop energy is contagious.
Laurita is the founder of the non-profit org The Laurita Spina Bifida Project. It’s a place that connects spina bifida individuals and families around the world. It also provides education for health professionals on issues affecting this community, including mental health and adult-care. It is a space where families find support and where everyone can learn more about the social stigma of living with spina bifida.
I invite you to watch our IGTV on Laurita’s IG, at Laurita Tellado.
Multilingual and bicultural, Laurita has traveled to many countries with her parents and has had the opportunity of meeting global organizations that are making a difference on behalf of spina bifida. Her non-profit has partnered with Hope for children with disabilities and their #ProjectUganda. They are currently raising funds for the building of an accessible and inclusive school in Uganda. The Sipping for Spina Bifida event, a joined venture with One Hope wine runs until November 30.
3 tips for parents to raise children to embrace social good.
- We’re not alone in this world, so it’s important to emphasize to kids that we all do better when we look out for each other.
- Disability doesn’t discriminate, so when it comes to helping organizations that support people with disabilities, you’re aiding a cause that can very likely affect all of us at some point in time.
- You get to meet many different people who share in this passion for giving to others, and it can take you to different places, too.
Gracias, Laurita!
