Lately, I have had many conversations with non-native Spanish speakers who are fluent and passionate about the language and about raising their children to know the culture, so they learn to love the language. I appreciate the cultural approach to language learning because my husband and I used it quite often when our children were growing up.
Minda Gomez, founder of the space Martinez Kids Adventures is doing an amazing job at raising her half Mexican, half American children to be proud of their two cultures and to be fluent in both English and Spanish, with the support of her Acapulco born husband, their extended family, and their community.
In Minda’s home, they use the Minority Language at Home approach. However, Minda has been learning lately that relationships come first. “I have heard you say that flexibility is key, and we are proof of that. Families have to adapt to what is happening at home, with all the kids, and adjust the family language plan accordingly.”
Minda, a teacher of English language learners, is committed to teaching children to be proud of their bilingual “superpowers”, as she calls it.

Minda Gomez, Founder Of Martinez Kids Adventures
As a new children’s book author/illustrator, Minda has created a book series called Martinez Kids Adventures. The first book, The Secret Door, is a middle-grade chapter book for kids and families.
Each chapter has a new place for the kids to explore like the forest, the rainforest, the sea. These adventures are made possible by a grandfather-type neighbor, an inventor, who takes them through the adventures.
“The Secret Door” is published in English and in Spanish, and there is also a guide discussion for parents and for teachers available on Minda’s website: www.mindagomez.com
Next for Minda is the second book in the Martinez Kids Adventures series, an adventure that takes place in the Artic. She is currently working on the book illustrations.
I like that Minda is writing for our older Latino kids. We certainly could use more chapter books with authentic stories that our children can identify with.
