Lately, I have many wonderful Latinas that share my passion for raising bilingual and that are creating materials to support families’ language learning. One of those Latinas is fellow compatriota, Puerto Rican mom entrepreneur Marimer Maldonado-Hilker, creator of We Are Root-Ed Box. Marimer goes beyond language learning. She wants to make sure that children are learning about their country, their heritage in the process.
We are Root-Ed was created to help families raise bicultural children. Marimer wanted to provide a resource that would provide tools that can help parents teach children about those customs, traditions, sites, intricacies, food, and history of their roots. Having been born and raised in Puerto Rico, the first subscription box is about Puerto Rico. Now in its 4th edition box, We are Root-Ed has covered topics such as Three Kings Day, Central Mountain Range, Planet Earth Day, activities about the Taíno Indians, Old San Juan, and many other aspects of the Puerto Rican culture. The March box was all about the city of Ponce, where I grew up!
I invite you to watch our IGTV!
The monthly content includes educational materials and activities that are fun for the family to do together. “It’s all about learn, play and creating family memories.”
The idea is that kids will discover Puerto Rico through games, puzzles, stickers, crafts, food recipes curated to complement educational themes including sports, music, musical instruments, and more.
In addition to the monthly content, your first box will include a few special items:
- MIS RAICES Family Book. Before learning about Puerto Rico, start discovering more about your family.
- ALBUMS to collect the monthly cards included with your subscription so kids create their own books. Always available to review over and over.
- A Puerto Rican flag and map. Pick a special place to keep them!
- What is next for We are Root-Ed? They would like to do boxes for every Latino culture. “There are so many cultures to explore. The United States is multicultural. So many children can benefit!”
