Finding Resources & Supporting Your Child’s Education During A Pandemic

I recently chatted with Nury Castillo Crawford, Founder/CEO of 1010 Publishing–a small publishing house in Georgia on bilingual/dual-language books. A life-long leader in education, Nury is currently the Dir. of Academic Support for the Gwinnet County Public Schools and the Pres. of the Georgia Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents.

“I came to the United States from Peru at age 10. I was not proficient in the English language. I decided to share my story but soon learned that the publishing press wanted their own vision of my story. There were no books around that had characters that look like me. I decided to change that.”

The mother of three young adult sons, Nury launched 1010 Publishing two years ago to ensure that there were books designed to share the superpower of being bilingual, bi-literate and bicultural. She’s also the author of two

bilingual children’s books.

1. READ-everything! Books, labels, recipes, street signs!

2. Patience is a virtue-It’s hard, but our children need it!

3. Everyday learning-Use every opportunity as a teaching moment.

4. Monitor screen time-Try puzzles, board games, side-walk chalk, jump

rope.

5. Be an advocate-If you need help, support, resources, material, SPEAK UP! Let your local officials know  that your school district needs help!

1. Forget all the rules, just WRITE!

2. Professional development–Read, research, write.

3. Schedule writing time–at least 10 minutes every day!

4. Note pad–Carry a note pad to write ideas and thoughts.

5. Think ahead–Connect with like-minded authors, communities that can offer guidance and support.
