Covid trauma is real and can affect both parents and children, at any age. Finding ways to cope and staying ahead of the negative effects is important. In my conversation with April Mayorga last week, she shared tips that can help parents during this difficult time and also children. April is an expert in trauma, anxiety, and depression and she is part of the LatinxTherapy group, a nationwide bilingual directory, and podcast serving the Latino community.
April suggested that parents take at least 15 minutes of alone time a day to recharge and to re-energize. She also encouraged parents to have open communication with their children about wearing masks, the importance of social distancing, and what is going on with the school year. It is especially important that teens feel listened to, validated, and that they have the opportunity to express their emotions without feeling judged or criticized. Teens that understand that there is a correlation between their thoughts, their feelings, and their behavior, are less likely to feel depressed or anxious.
Tips for parents to keep calm and ride the next wave:
- Honor self-care – even 15 minutes a day.
- Create a support system – identify ways to reach out.
- Use this time to connect with your children in a positive way – bonding opportunities.
Tips for teens as they start a new school year, possibly with online learning only:
- Manage screen time.
- Be active – encourage outside play, walks.
- Encourage emotion identification.
- Increase communication – self-awareness.
