A year ago, Bernie Molina, creator of the space Salvi/Mex recipes, self-proclaimed señora kitchen hacks, and author of Herencia Cookbook, visited us for the first time. Her book had just been released, her baby just born, and she was trying to find a balance between career, marriage, and motherhood. Fast forward to today, Bernie’s book received an International Latino Book Award, her baby is a year old, and career, marriage, and motherhood have found their groove.
I invite you to watch our IGTV.
Bernie is half Mexican, half Salvadoran, and she grew up in South East Los Angeles. Her Salvadoran mom owned and operated a business in their neighborhood. This time, Bernie and I talked about Salvadoran culture. She has fond memories of being in the kitchen with her mom and learning about the foods and the recipes while helping her mom make dinner every nite.
While Bernie and I chatted, we also made “Casamiento,” a typical Salvadoran dish that combines rice and black beans and that people eat at breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner. Bernie says that the dish is often served with a side of fried plantains, crema, and a sprinkle of cheese.
Bernie’s Salvi/Mex platform continues to grow in popularity, and she loves sharing recipes inspired by her heritage and the matriarchs in her life, always adding her own twist. She also offers virtual cooking classes.
