Some kids have already gone back to school but others are still enjoying the last weeks of summer. If you are looking for one more book for your kids to read, I recommend The Sour Truth by Alma Sánchez. As you know, ReadConmigo is a national award-winning program and I have teamed up with them to encourage bilingual reading at home. And, did I mention is free?! ¿Divertido, no?
For ages four and up, The Sour Truth, is a book that teaches life lessons in a clever way. ¡Muy ingenioso! In the book, Violet Velascow, is the main character. And like most kids her age tend to do, she tells a little lie to try to avoid doing something she really doesn’t want to do. In the end, as in real life, the truth prevails.
The Sour Truth teaches children that it is always better to be polite and friendly, especially around close friends and family. It encourages young readers to reflect on important human values that will matter for the rest of their life: dignity, respect, and good moral character. Kids will learn that it’s better to be honest because there are consequences when you’re not, and that people’s feelings get hurt. They will also learn what about trust and being trustworthy. ¡La honestidad hace la diferencia!
Learning tough life lessons at any age is not easy. It is even more difficult for young kids. As parents, we wish we could shield our children from all harm and hurt, but unfortunately, this is not the case. Being young, they need our help to know how to distinguish right from wrong and when it’s the right time to say the right thing.
Counting on bilingual resources such as books that can help parents, through storytelling, teach valuable life-lessons to their kids is wonderful. ¡Qué maravilla!
Now, go read The Sour Truth with your kids! Let me know what you think! Comparte y comenta.
