Born and raised in Ohio, young Latina author Cristina Sicard is half Dominican and half American. Chatting with her last week was like talking to my own daughter, Franceska, about her own multicultural journey. Charismatic, poised, full of cultural pride, Cristina is the author of two children’s books. Her first book Harmony is a story about a llama that addresses the struggles that immigrant families face when leaving their country of origin behind, teaching the readers how to embrace all the wonders of life in the new place.
Her second book, Sábana the Sloth, is a lesson on worries and anxiety, and friendship. Cristina’s mom was the illustrator for this book. “I love working with my mom on this project. I am excited to share her talent with the world!”
Cristina and I talked about her Dominican family and the impact they have had on her love of culture.
I invite you to watch our IGTV!
A fan of Latino authors Julia Alvarez and Isabel Allende and Latino author, Junot Díaz, Cristina has loved books since she was a child and truly believes in the power of stories. “We all have a story to tell. We need more Latino authors out there!”
