Award-winning Latina blogger mom Melanie Mendez visited us last week– Energetic, confident, poised, Melanie’s charm is inspiring, and her love of culture is contagious.
Melanie’s platform @quemeanswhat is a place where education and entertainment meet culture and family. A Texas Latina, Melanie’s blog explores her Mexican-American identity as well as the everyday life of American-Latino culture. An advocate of STEM, Melanie believes in encouraging and motivating Latino children to pursue careers in science and math.
“There needs to be more diversity in those areas. Latino children need to be in those spaces. They should be the future inventors, the scientists!”, says Melanie.
During #HispanicHeritageMonth, Melanie has been hosting a series of FB lives called Latinas Who Lead, showcasing Latinas leading in their respective industries. She’s also a podcast host and an expert on social media.
I invite you to watch our IGTV!
Here are Melanie’s 5 tips to promote culture all year round:
- Get in the habit to ask why. It’s an excellent opportunity for exploring how culture fits in in our daily lives.
- Read books from different authors, different cultures.
- Communicate with your kids. Have an open dialogue.
- Use food as a tool to instill the love of culture.
- Make art a part of your life. Learn about it together and create it. Whether it’s painting, music, or dance, art is culture.
Thank you, Melanie!!
