Last week I had the opportunity to chat with Sonia Smith-Kang, mother of 4, founder and designer at MixedUpClothing, and a Registered Nurse. Born in Puerto Rico, this proud military brat, whose family was stationed on the Hawaiian island of O’ahu, is married to a Korean-American. Drawing from these rich heritages was the inspiration behind her children’s apparel brand, which promotes multiculturalism and celebrates diversity/inclusion.
As a creative entrepreneur, Sonia’s always finding ways to help others. Her company has made a pivot from making apparel to making and distributing face masks. She combined her experience in medicine with design to create fabric face masks in accordance with the CDC guidelines.
As a small business owner, Sonia is thankful to be able to provide employment to her amazing sewing team who are working up a storm with their “Buy 1, Donate 1” initiative. With every mask purchased, one is donated to medical personnel, first responders, essential workers, and other vulnerable populations.
Here 4 tips for small business owner moms at this time:
- Find your tribe – they are the ones that will support and help you define any new ideas
- Feed the soul – follow your passion, what moves you, the why, and the how.
- Live with intention- find the balance of what feeds your soul with creating and sustaining your business
- Believe- in yourself and take that leap of faith!
