Speaking to Bernie Molina last week I felt like I was talking to my own daughter. Though my girl is a couple of years younger, she is part of the same generation. Smart, charismatic, and confident, Bernie is a beautiful new mom and the brains behind the new book, Herencia Cookbook. In this book, Bernie honors Latinx culture with recipes and anecdotes that celebrate her Salvadorian-Mexican roots and the matriarchs that have impacted her life.
Bernie was raised bilingual in a house where Spanish was the main language and where preserving both of her parents’ cultures was part of her everyday life. She believes this example contributed to the proud Latina she is today. Growing up, Bernie’s mom owned a bakery. Her mother’s example of a working mother raising five children has also shaped her life and she is grateful for all the women in her family that have guided her and encouraged her to pursue her dream of becoming a home cook of authentic recipes and classic recipes with her personal twist.
An advocate of exercise and healthy eating, Herencia Cookbook includes Latin-fusion recipes that she grew up eating greatly influenced by what she calls her SalviMex cooking.
